Marble vs. Granite, Genetic info, and my observations:
My opinion really hasn't changed from '06-'07. In fact with
the amount of low / side-wall granite pattern that's showing up on these
juveniles from the Marble x Normal breeding (Clutch 2, below) - it seems to be
re-enforcing what I mentioned in the past. Want to read what I had to say?
Click away HERE
. But remember, ignorance is bliss. Consider yourself warned.

*You'll notice that each
animal may have several accompanying pictures. This
is because I photographed the animals with and without a flash, and some
from different angles because I wanted the viewer to see the different
attributes that many of these juveniles possess. Unfortunately, as
an amateur photographer (and a neurotic one at that), it's hard for me to
predict whether the flash is going to over-saturate the animal and wash out it's
natural tones or not. Without a flash exposure, some pics are just TOO
dark and you can't appreciate the honey/mahogany marbling contrast of these
Borneos.
The bottom line - Hang out awhile and feel
free to check 'em all out.....

2/9/07 Marble vs. Granite, Genetic info, and my
observations: There seems to currently be some confusion
and debate amongst breeders and keepers, concerning the genetics of some of the
Borneo Short-tail Python (Python curtus breitensteini) morphs we see
offered in the hobby today. I won't claim that my total understanding is an
exception to the rule. The original Marble mutation has always been thought to
be a dominant morph, easily reproduced in 1st generation offspring if one of the
parents was a visual Marble animal. Lately, I've seen reports of what
others are calling a "Granite" morph. The descriptions I've come across of this
morph label it as being significantly similar to the Marble morph with one
exception; others claim that the Granite morph is recessive vs. the Marble morph
being dominant. *I'll continue with this conversation - but the reader
should take note that I'll leave out some specific breeder names who's
permission I haven't asked for, and until I can draw further conclusions from my
own breeding observations.
When I began this project, I started by acquiring a group of
Borneos consisting of 1.1 Marbles, and 0.2 "normal" females. The marbles
originated from Mike Kostakos, who originally acquired his animals from who I'll
refer to as the "authentic originator" of the Marble morph. There was no question in my mind that they
were "Marbles," and there continues to be no question. The two normal
females came from unrelated (to my knowledge), distant sources. Just like anyone
else working with genetically dominant morphs, I expected a certain ratio of
marble offspring from breeding the male marble to the various females. I bred
the Marbles together and also bred the male Marble to each individual normal
female - I didn't quite get the results that I was expecting. The
resulting offspring from Marble x Marble were all, what I now consider "Intense
Marbles." They all possessed the same high granite side-walls (flanks) and
highly intense contrast of dorsal coloration as the adults do. Basically,
Marble x Marble
yielded all Marble. It was when the Marble x Normal clutches hatched that I
became a bit confused. Neither of the Marble x Normal clutches yielded
what I observed as "Intense Marbles." The clutch from normal female 1
contained no Intense Marbles, but a percentage did possess moderate granite
sidewalls and some less intense marbling contrast to their dorsal and side
coloration. The clutch from normal female 2 also lacked any Intense Marbles, but
also possessed offspring (although a smaller percentage) that had moderate
granite sidewalls and some less intense marbling contrast to their dorsal and
side coloration.
What to think? My immediate conclusion was that maybe the "Marbles"
I was working with weren't quite as dominant as I original believed? Could they
be the "granites" that I've heard others speak of? Could the lower granite side
walls and light marbling be a heterozygous marker? But, if so - shouldn't
all the offspring from the normal
females possess this heterozygous marker? Not all do. The clutch from normal
female 1 contained a low percentage of normal offspring. The clutch from normal
female 2 contained a high percentage of normal offspring. Both females were
virgins and raised by myself from juveniles/sub-adults prior to this breeding.
That knocks out sperm retention from another male. All (3) clutches were
incubated at 88.5-90F. That should knock out incubation temperature influences
on pattern or color appearance, right?
My Current Hypothesis: I refer to this as a
hypothesis, rather than a conclusion. Until more breeding is done by myself and
others, or until more breeders want to make their own
specific observations available, I genuinely believe that the marble animals I
work with are dominant (co-dom) and possess a lesser and super form - much like
tiger/super-tiger reticulated pythons and pastel/super-pastel ball pythons.
I can only base this on my own observations right now, because unfortunately there is way
too much bias and deviation that exists in this hobby. But, that's another
story. I certainly invite others to offer their own specific observations - I'd
be happy to discuss it. I
believe that the "normals" are just that, normals. And, that the more intense
animals will reproductively act more like dominant supers, and the less intense
animals will act as reproductively dominant lessers. I will try to post pictures
on this page of all the adults in the near future and allow others to
form their own opinion. This is just my current opinion from my limited
observations and my own experience. I obviously can't guarantee this is
how the genetics are working yet. However, it's sure as hell how it
appears.
More breeding trials, with more observations are in the works.
In the meantime - I think the offspring below are priced fairly, no matter what YOU think they are :) Joe Yakelis 4/5/07
